Morrisons and Co-op to launch kiosks allowing shoppers to sell in old tech for cash

Morrisons and Co-op are set to introduce kiosks across their store estates allowing shoppers to sell their old electronics and “recirculate old tech”.

Kiosks operated by Spring will enable shoppers to simply post their unused tech, including over 8000 phones, tablets, e-readers and smart watches, through a letter box.

After creating an account with Spring, customers will then receive cash for their products directly to their bank accounts, or can choose to have the funds donated to a charity of their choice.

According to Spring, it will either repair and resell the devices, or break them down, strip their precious metals and recycle them, ensuring nothing goes to landfill.

The kiosks will be introduced to 20 Co-op stores across London, Brighton, Leeds and Manchester, with plans to launch up to 250 kiosks across the UK over the next year.

Meanwhile Morrisons says the kiosks are “coming soon”.

A near identical initiative was launched by Asda and MusicMagpie just weeks ago, seeing 300 SMARTDrop kiosks set to be installed across its stores by 2022.

“Creating a circular economy is key to living more sustainably, that’s why we’re aiming to get almost 100,000 devices back into the world over the next year,” Spring co-founder Tom Williams said.

“Spring makes it easy for both retailers and consumers to recirculate old tech, which not only puts money in their pockets but also has a major impact on the environment. Starting with Co-op, hundreds of Spring pods will be popping up at retailers around the country in the coming months.”
